January’s Road

Before the eyes

lies the silent melodies of distant thoughts.

They are buried under the wintry solitude

of January’s road in a traveler’s seasons,

the frozen trail of isolation

so far from home or rest.

Haze rises in the stillness

to cloud the vision that inspired the soul,

heart chills from the cold barren moments

when there is no sun seen in the day

that can guide through the frosted quiet

where life loses its warmth

and question comes like a blizzard.

How it stirs the concerns

over if this path truly is the right direction,

which will lead to some future realization

about what will truly give fire to the night,

a flame in passion to compel the risk

faced by crossing those forbidden landscapes.

In between the icy doubts clinging to the mind

there is the hint of heat remembered,

summoned as the image of what arriving

at the fireplace in goals reached can mean.

Then pushing aside the blustery blasts in fears,

defiantly stepping on the accelerator,

ready to race through the obstacles again

on the way to the summer of fulfillment.

It is never obtained without passing through

those blizzards and drifts that come without warning.

Though they are not on any map,

inside one knows any journey taken

always has challenges,

with the only true satisfaction coming

from going through those trial laden sceneries

instead of turning back.
